While public transportation will be free for those living in the region, those who do not reside in Montpellier and tourists will pay 1.60 euros per journey. With the decision, Montpellier became the 3rd city in Europe with free public transportation.

It was decided that public transportation will be free for the residents of Montpellier, France.

Montpellier Mayor Michael Delafosse announced in his post on the social media platform X that it was decided that public transportation will be free for those living in the city. According to the decision, city residents can use public transportation free of charge with a special card, while tourists and those whose residence address is not in Montpellier will continue to be charged 1.60 euros per journey.

With the implementation of the “free public transportation” project, which Delafosse presented as an election promise in 2020, Montpellier became the 3rd city in Europe where public transportation is free. The municipality stated that financing will be provided for the decision taken with a new transportation tax to be applied to companies with more than 11 employees.
