IT HAS A HORRIBLE PAST

Britain is home to many ancient villages , towns and cities that were once vibrant centers of trade and commerce . But Wharram Percy in North Yorkshire is one of the most intriguing due to its horrific past.

FULL OF RUINS OF THE PAST

This ship, filled with relics of the past, was previously described as “a mystery too chilling to believe”, Express reports. Located near the market town of Malton, Wharram Percy had around 40 houses in its heyday.

THERE IS A HIDDEN CHURCH

At first glance, the abandoned area seems to no longer contain anything of importance, but closer inspection reveals an entire settlement. A hidden church , collapsed walls and low brickwork can still be seen crossing the fields that once marked the village ‘s border.

ARCHAEOLOGISTS ARE TRYING NEW AND INTERESTING METHODS

English Heritage says Wharram Percy once served as the parish of the area and was an important religious site for residents. For over 60 years, archaeologists have tried new and interesting methods in the region; some of these were discovered during the Smithsonian Channel documentary “Mystic Britain.”

A STRANGE HOLE HAS BEEN DISCOVERED

A strange pit was discovered during an archaeological excavation, arousing great interest due to its unusual location. The pit was found far away from the local church and cemetery , typical resting places for villagers .

DISTURBING DISCOVERY

Speaking to the program’s host Clive Anderson, Dr. Stuart Wrathmell said the “disturbing discovery” included more than 100 human bones. The find suggests the town has a much spookier history than first thought.

MASS GRAVE

The pit served as a mass grave for at least ten people. Dr Wrathmell added: “It’s a bit odd because you’d think most people in the village would be buried in the churchyard .

IT MAY BE BEFORE THE MIDDLE AGES

“When this pit was found in 1963 it was thought it had to be pre-medieval because we knew there were Romans living nearby, so it could have been prehistoric or Roman bones.”

MADE WITH RADIOCARBON

“Some of them were radiocarbon-dated and found to be medieval, when everyone should have been buried here in the churchyard rather than the farm .”

A TRAGIC END

Dr Wrathmell explained that people who fell into the pit were believed to have met a tragic end. Anderson said of the find: “[ The Village ] holds a secret so chilling you won’t believe it.”
