Kansas City Juvenile Charged as Adult in Shooting Death of 11-Year-Old
Re’mori Roath is now charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Kourtney Freeman
A juvenile in Kansas City has been charged as an adult with murder in connection with the shooting death of 11-year-old Kourtney Freeman, who was killed in her home in April.
Re’Mori T. Roath, whose exact age is redacted from court records, faces charges of second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action.
According to a probable cause affidavit, police believe the shooting was a targeted attack. Officers responded to reports of shots fired near East 33rd Street and Flora Avenue on April 10th, where they found Freeman suffering from a head wound. Despite life-saving measures, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Witnesses told police that someone had arrived in a white vehicle after communicating with a resident about a marijuana sale on Snapchat. After entering the home, shots were fired through the front door, striking Freeman. Evidence collected at the scene included 12 spent 9mm casings and shattered glass.
Kourtney’s death marked the sixth homicide in Kansas City that year involving a victim under 18. Since her death, eight other juveniles have been killed in the city.
