Mkoani District Health Officer Haji Bakari Haji said that after the samples were examined in the medical laboratory, it was confirmed that the victims died after eating sea turtle meat. Haji said the victims ate the meat on Tuesday but did not report the incident to authorities until Friday for fear of being condemned.

7 PEOPLE DIED FOR THE SAME REASON IN 2023

In March 2023, 7 people died and 8 people were hospitalized after eating sea turtle meat on Mafia Island in Tanzania’s Indian Ocean. Juma Khatibu, head of Bweni village on Tanzania’s Mafia Island, noted that the victims bought sea turtle meat from fishermen and ate it. The meat is suspected to be poisonous.
