About the Show: Shortland Street (Shortland Street 7840) is a New Zealand prime-time soap opera about the fictional Shortland Street Hospital that first aired on New Zealand Television’s TV2 on 25 May 1992. It is the country’s longest-running drama and soap opera. With over 6,000 episodes and airing continuously for 25 years, the series is one of the most watched television programs in New Zealand.

The series initially premiered as five half-hour episodes each week and received mixed reviews upon its initial release. Its ratings dropped after airing and it would have been canceled had TVNZ not ordered a year’s worth of episodes in advance. In early 1993 the series’ ratings soared and TVNZ renewed production. Today, it is one of New Zealand’s highest-rated programs and frequently ranks in AGB Nielsen Media Research’s top 5 programs of the week.
