Information of 73 million customer accounts was stolen
US-based telecommunications giant AT&T announced that personal data of approximately 7.6 million current account holders and 65.4 million former customers were leaked to the Dark Web.
AT&T said on Saturday that the data leaked about two weeks ago contained personal information such as Social Security numbers and dated back to 2019 or earlier. According to AT&T, the source of the data is still being investigated and it is unknown whether it comes from the company or a vendor.
MILLIONS OF PASSWORDS WERE STOLEN
AT&T said there was no evidence yet of unauthorized access to its systems and that the leak had not had a significant impact on its operations as of Saturday. Following the leak, millions of customers reset their account passwords.
According to data compiled by Bloomberg, it is the third largest company in the United States in the telecommunications sector, after AT&T, Verizon Communications and T-Mobile US. The company suffered a widespread outage in February that took hours to resolve, prompting an investigation by the federal government.
