The Waterloo community mourns the loss of one of its most respected figures, Jim Walsh. Former General Counsel of VGM Group Inc. and founder of JSA Development, Walsh was the driving force behind many of the city’s most significant rehabilitation projects. His passing on October 12, 2023, after a courageous fight against cancer, left a void that will be deeply felt by many.

Who was Jim Walsh?

Jim Walsh was a respected figure in Waterloo, Iowa, known for his legal acumen, business savvy, and commitment to community development. As General Counsel of VGM Group Inc., he provided invaluable advice and guidance. But it was his work through JSA Development that left a lasting impact on Waterloo’s landscape.

In 1999, Walsh embarked on a new venture with the founding of JSA Development. The company began by purchasing a building at 315 E 5th Street that is now home to the famed law firm of Clark, Butler, Walsh and Hamann.

Over the course of 24 years, JSA Development has grown from a personal endeavor to a significant corporate asset. The company has carried out more than 22 historically significant rehabilitations, breathing new life into once overlooked or abandoned buildings.

Death of Jim Walsh

Jim Walsh passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2023, after a courageous fight against cancer. His resilience and spirit during this difficult period were a testament to his strength and character. Walsh’s cause of death was cancer. He fought valiantly against the disease, displaying the same determination and endurance that marked his career.
