THE NUMBER OF COUPLES DECIDING ABOUT EUTHANASIA IS INCREASING IN THE COUNTRY
Recently, there has been an increase in the number of couples choosing to end their lives together in the Netherlands. 93-year-old Dries van Agt and his wife Eugenie van Agt also joined the couples who ended their lives through euthanasia.
Van Agt served as prime minister of the Netherlands from 1977 to 1982. The Van Agt couple had been together for 70 years. While the news of the couple’s death was announced by the ‘Rights Forum’, a pro-Palestinian group founded by van Agt, it was learned that the euthanasia took place on February 5.
Euthanasia has been applied since 2002
Since 2002, euthanasia has been legalized in the Netherlands for reasons such as unbearable pain, loss of hope for salvation and a long-standing independent desire to die. While the number of couples applying for euthanasia in the country was 26 in 2020, it increased to 32 in 2021 and 58 in 2022.
