Andreas Brehme’s cause of death has been revealed!

Andreas Brehme, who scored West Germany’s winning goal in the 1990 World Cup final, died at the age of 63. The left-back took the decisive penalty in the 85th minute as Franz Beckenbauer’s team beat Argentina 1-0 in Rome.

Brehme played 86 times in Germany during his football career, including for Kaiserslautern, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan.

German newspaper Bild reported that Brehme died of a heart attack in Munich on Monday night. It was reported that Brehme was taken to the emergency room of a clinic on Ziemssenstrasse, close to his home, but could not be saved.

The newspaper said Brehme was deeply affected by the death of his former coach and mentor Beckenbauer last month. He is survived by his girlfriend, Susanne Schaefer, and two adult sons from his marriage to Pilar.

WHO IS ANDREAS BREHME

Player Brehme was known as a modern full-back who was not afraid to go forward to cross or shoot, and he had a good goalscoring record for a defender.

He was also adept at taking free kicks and penalties, and was the opener for West Germany against England in the 1990 semi-final. Brehme’s ten-year international career, which included eight goals, also included the 1986, 1990 and 1994 World Cups and the 1984, 1988 and 1992 European Championships.
