Why did Daniel Esparza die? Obituary and details

A Bowie High School student who collapsed during a football game on Friday has tragically died. In a statement released earlier today, University Medical Center officials confirmed the unfortunate news of the passing of Daniel Esparza.

Daniel is a seventeen-year-old senior at Bowie High School. He is a member of the Bowie High School Marching Band and was appointed the band’s sole drummer this year. He is also a member of ROTC and a well-rounded student.

On September 8, 2023, while performing for the band at a high school football game against Ysleta High School at Bowie Stadium, Daniel collapsed and lost consciousness to the point that medical personnel had to initiate CPR on Daniel. The EMS and Fire Department arrived and attended to him, continuing CPR and defibrillation and transporting Daniel to UMC.

Daniel passed away on Sunday, September 9; He left his friends, family and community in mourning.

The highly anticipated game between Bowie High School and Ysleta High School was suddenly canceled on Friday. The reason for this unexpected decision was a medical emergency that left both teams and fans in shock.

Esparza was treated at the scene before being taken to a local hospital, according to the El Paso Independent School District.

“The El Paso ISD community grieves with the family of Bowie High School student Daniel Esparza who tragically passed away Sunday, Sept. 10. Daniel was a beloved member of the school community. He was a dutiful member of the Bowie band, mariachi group and JROTC who relished his role as a leader. El Paso ISD stands with Daniel’s family and with the entirety of Bowie High School as they gather the strength to deal with this trying time. A team of counselors is available to Bowie students and staff, and the district will provide any additional support necessary. Thank you to our Bowie students and staff, our local emergency first-responder personnel, and everyone in the community who has offered support throughout the last few days,” The El Paso ISD said in a statement release.”
