The Moroccan Ministry of Internal Affairs shared updated information about the earthquake that occurred on the night of September 8.

In the statement of the Ministry, it was stated that the loss of life due to the magnitude 7 earthquake increased to 2 thousand 901 and the number of injured increased to 5 thousand 530.

Tent cities are being created

The Moroccan Civil Defense Institution provides shelter, clothing and food support to earthquake victims in the tent cities it established in the earthquake zone.

250 families whose houses were heavily damaged or destroyed are staying in the tent city established in the region close to Al-Huz, the epicenter of the earthquake.

62-year-old Muhammed Emhamid, who stayed in the tent city, said that his house was completely destroyed, so he and his family lived in the tent city.

“We are more afraid for children and women”

Emhamid stated that it is very difficult to live in a tent and said:

“The weather is hot, but it gets very cold in this region at night. The region located at the foot of Mount Tubkal is famous for its cold weather. That’s why we need to move to permanent housing as soon as possible. We are more afraid for children and women, if they get sick, it will be very difficult to treat them under these conditions.”

7 magnitude earthquake in Morocco

A magnitude 7 earthquake occurred in Morocco on the night of September 8, with the epicenter in the El-Huz region of Marrakech.

In addition to Marrakesh, the earthquake also affected the capital Rabat and the cities of Casablanca, Meknes, Agadir and Fes.

In its previous statement, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that 2 thousand 862 people died and 2 thousand 562 people were injured in the earthquake.
